The City of Arlington is currently accepting applications for two to four (2-4) part-time Police Officers in the Police Department.  The position performs general police duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of Federal and State laws and the ordinances of the City of Arlington.  Hired applicants will be added to the City’s “pool” of part-time officers.  The City currently offers at least four 8-hour shifts a week to part-time officers; however there is no guaranteed or set hours.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  The primary purpose of the position is to provide for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of the law in a manner consistent with Federal and State law and municipal ordinances and according to the policies of the City of Arlington.

 

Supervision Received:  Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police.

 

Supervision Exercised:  None.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  1. Patrol a specified beat on foot or in a patrol car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations.
  2. Apprehend, cite or arrest law violators, prepare written reports of crimes and assist in prosecution of law violators.
  3. Answer calls and complaints involving automobile, fires, rescue attempts and other accidents, conduct accident investigations. Provides first aid for injured persons; directs traffic and takes safeguards to prevent further accidents. Prepares reports on such situations.
  4. Respond to all medical emergencies to provide assistance to the ambulance crew as needed and to provide first aid as appropriate.
  5. Make arrests and issue citations for violations of Federal and State law or municipal ordinances.
  6. Take fingerprints, obtain witnesses, gather and preserve evidence.
  7. Report matters that require the attention of other municipal departments.
  8. Answer questions and give directions, information or aid as requested by the public.
  9. Check doors at business places after closing hours.
  10. Provide escorts for funerals and fire trucks, an officer will direct traffic as necessary or required.
  11. Provide services as required for high school activities and city functions, etc.
  12. Conduct tours and make appearances for informative purposes at meetings as requested.
  13. Provide evidence and testimony in court.
  14. Prepare reports daily, as required, for accidents, investigations, missing persons, stolen autos, Criminal histories, roster cards, violator’s statements, supplementary and miscellaneous reports.
  15. Interviews witnesses and victims; taking statements and interrogating suspects.
  16. Locates and removes stray animals and eliminates nuisance animals in a safe manner.
  17. Ensure maintenance of motor pool, as directed.
  18. Perform other duties as needed or required.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILLITIES

  1. Knowledge of safety and / or first aid measures.
  2. Working knowledge of City programs, policies and operations.
  3. Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
  4. Knowledge of police procedures and techniques.
  5. Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.
  6. Skill in handling and discharging firearms in an efficient and safe manner.
  7. Considerable ability to establish effective working relationships with City staff, elected officials, and the general public.
  8. Adaptability, emotional maturity, objectivity, and skill in dealing with people are required.
  9. Considerable ability to hear and speak when conversing in person or by telephone.
  10. Knowledge of local, state and federal laws as they require to a law enforcement officer’s job duties.
  11. Ability to analyze situations quickly and determine appropriate action.
  12. Considerable ability to read reports correspondence, computer screens and other documents.
  13. Ability to operate and / or be qualified in the operation of firearms, patrol vehicle, testing equipment, radios and computerized information system.
  14. Skill to expertly drive a motor vehicle, sometimes under adverse conditions and at high speeds.

The City of Arlington is currently accepting applications for two to three (2-3) part-time Community Center Attendants.  The position is primarily responsible for monitoring a variety of activities at the Arlington Community Center including weddings, dances and other rentals mainly on weekends and at night.  Minimum Qualifications:  Must possess and maintain a valid Minnesota Class “D” driver’s license, must have graduated from high school or have a GED equivalent; Certified in CPR/First Aid or ability to obtain in 60 days; and must be willing to work weekend nights.  The City is looking to establish a “pool” of eligible employees who will be willing to mainly work on Saturday nights.  There are 30-35 functions a year at the Community Center that an attendant would be required. Likely shifts would be four to five hours in length. No guaranteed or set hours.

General Statement of Duties:  Responsible for monitoring a variety of activities at the Community Center including weddings, dances, and other rentals mainly on weekends and at night.

 

Supervision Received:  Works closely with the Community Center Coordinator and is under the direct supervision of the City Administrator.

 

Supervision Exercised:  None; may provide minimal oversight over those using the Community Center.  

 

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED

  1. Responsible for monitoring large functions taking place at the Community Center, mainly at nights and on the weekends including holidays
  1. Provides courteous service to all renters – answers questions from the general public
  1. Responsible for overall cleanliness and look of the Community Center during use.
  1. Responsible for safety of the participants and maintaining a positive and healthy environment – anticipates potential risks of injury and takes measures to remove them
  1. Assist renters with Community Center equipment and building functions
  1. Follow and enforce applicable safety rules and regulations and sanitation requirements related to the use of the Community Center including equipment
  1. Monitor restrooms for cleanliness and check to make sure toilet paper/paper towels are filled
  1. Performs routine maintenance as necessary during functions, i.e., sweeps and mops, empties trash cans; reports building maintenance requirements.
  1. Lock and unlock Community Center when needed
  1. Remove snow and ice from sidewalks and entryways when needed
  1. Set-up and breakdown tables and chairs when necessary
  1. Call local Police Department when problems arise with participants and renters of the Community Center
  1. Accurately communicates information, including any problems that may arise, to assigned supervisors in a timely and useful manner

 

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES

  • Skilled in greeting and assisting the general public in a professional manner.

  • Knowledge of Community Center policies and practices as they relate to those renting the facility (after training).
  • Knowledge of facility equipment and building functions (after training)
  • Knowledge of cleaning supplies and use of cleaning equipment
  • Must be able to communicate effectively both orally and in writing to customers.
  • Must be able to work independently within established guidelines
  • Must be willing to call 911/Police when disturbances arise at the Community Center
  • Must be flexible with schedule and willing and able to work weekends.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS

May be required to lift and/or carry supplies, materials, equipment and/or items weighing up to 50 pounds.  Work is performed typically with extended periods of standing and inactivity; however, sitting, walking, bending, stopping, and reaching is required on an intermittent basis.

 

MINIMIUM QUALIFICATIONS
