The City of Arlington is currently accepting applications for two to three (2-3) part-time Police Officers in the Police Department.  The position performs general police duties in the protection of life and property through the enforcement of Federal and State laws and the ordinances of the City of Arlington.  Hired applicants will be added to the City’s “pool” of part-time officers.  The City currently offers at least four 8-hour shifts a week to part-time officers; however there is no guaranteed or set hours. Minimum Qualifications:  Licensed by the P.O.S.T. or eligible to be licensed.  Must be certified in CPR and as a First Responder (may receive within 30 days of employment).  Must have at least one year of patrolling experience with a police department, and earned a post high school education in law enforcement.  Must have a valid Minnesota Class “D” driver’s license, and must be available to work a minimum of 24 hours per calendar month.  Salary: $13.50/hour.  For required application and job description, go on-line at www.arlingtonmn.com or contact Arlington City Offices, 204 Shamrock Drive, Arlington, MN 55307 – (507) 964-2378.  Resume and applications are due to the City Administrator no later than 5:00 p.m. on April 27, 2012.  The City of Arlington is an Equal Opportunity Employer.

DESCRIPTION OF WORK

 

General Statement of Duties:  The primary purpose of the position is to provide for the protection of life and property through the enforcement of the law in a manner consistent with Federal and State law and municipal ordinances and according to the policies of the City of Arlington. Supervision Received:  Works under the general supervision of the Chief of Police. Supervision Exercised:  None.

 

TYPICAL DUTIES PERFORMED

 

The listed examples may not include all duties performed by all positions in this class.  Duties may vary somewhat from position to position within a class.

 

  1. Patrol a specified beat on foot or in a patrol car to preserve law and order, to prevent and discover the commission of crime, and to enforce traffic and parking regulations.Apprehend, cite or arrest law violators, prepare written reports of crimes and assist in prosecution of law violators.Answer calls and complaints involving automobile, fires, rescue attempts and other accidents, conduct accident investigations. Provides first aid for injured persons; directs traffic and takes safeguards to prevent further accidents. Prepares reports on such situations.Respond to all medical emergencies to provide assistance to the ambulance crew as needed and to provide first aid as appropriate.Make arrests and issue citations for violations of Federal and State law or municipal ordinances.Take fingerprints, obtain witnesses, gather and preserve evidence.Report matters that require the attention of other municipal departments.Answer questions and give directions, information or aid as requested by the public.Check doors at business places after closing hours.Provide escorts for funerals and fire trucks, an officer will direct traffic as necessary or required.Provide services as required for high school activities and city functions, etc.Conduct tours and make appearances for informative purposes at meetings as requested.Provide evidence and testimony in court.Prepare reports daily, as required, for accidents, investigations, missing persons, stolen autos, Criminal histories, roster cards, violator’s statements, supplementary and miscellaneous reports.Interviews witnesses and victims; taking statements and interrogating suspects.Locates and removes stray animals and eliminates nuisance animals in a safe manner.Ensure maintenance of motor pool, as directed.

KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILLITIES

 

  1. Knowledge of safety and / or first aid measures.Working knowledge of City programs, policies and operations.Excellent verbal and written communication skills.Knowledge of police procedures and techniques.Proven ability to maintain confidentiality.Skill in handling and discharging firearms in an efficient and safe manner.Considerable ability to establish effective working relationships with City staff, elected officials, and the general public.Adaptability, emotional maturity, objectivity, and skill in dealing with people are required.Considerable ability to hear and speak when conversing in person or by telephone.Knowledge of local, state and federal laws as they require to a law enforcement officer’s job duties.Ability to analyze situations quickly and determine appropriate action.Considerable ability to read reports correspondence, computer screens and other documents.Ability to operate and / or be qualified in the operation of firearms, patrol vehicle, testing equipment, radios and computerized information system.
  2. Skill to expertly drive a motor vehicle, sometimes under adverse conditions and at high speeds.

 

MINIMUM REQUIREMENTS
